Maine Beach Guide
Maine Beach Guide for Southern and Midcoast Maine
Convenient and family friendly beaches
Reid State Park, located in Georgetown, consists of 1.5 miles of sand in 3 distinct beach sections. Choose from surf to protected swimming areas great for small children. Walls of beach roses surround the dunes and slice through the smell of salt and sunscreen like a surfboard in the crest.
Popham Beach, Phippsburg, features both a State Park and a free beach, which is located at the foot of one of our nations earlies military forts. While the State park delivers combed beaches and stunning ocean views, the free beach offers the same white sand, a locally owned restaurant and a free, unguided viewing opportunity of an amazing historical landmark.
Off the beaten path
Hermit Island, Phippsburg, also referred to as Small Point, offers a family friendly and easily accessible main beach. Wander a bit around the large camp ground though and you'll be delighted to find nearly 10 separate beaches! Many of the beaches are just across the way, while some are truly off the beaten path. Often deserted, the more remote of the beaches can be a shell seeker's find.
Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area, Phippsburg, is home to endangered birds, old growth trees and Midcoast Maine's most dazzling view. While many opt out or never hear of Popham's next door neighbor, the Bates-Morse Area is worth the trek that keeps many away. A lovely walk through bridged wetlands, mountain overlooks and dense forest leads to the grand finale, a white sand beach, generally deserted.
